Cancer of the oral cavity is a highly invasive and debilitating disease. This type of cancer develops most frequently on the tongue and buccal mucosa and floor of the mouth. Up to 40% of cases may be preceded by the presence of lesions “precancerous”

In the Italian population, carcinomas of the oral cavity are:

7% of all cancers in man
1% of all cancers in women
12 new cases per year per 100,000 population
9 dead year (males between 35-64 years of age) per 100,000 population
2 dead year (females between 35-64 years of age) per 100,000 population

The development of cancer is associated in 75% of cases with alcohol abuse and smoking. The combination of these two habits increase the risk of developing the disease by 15 times.
Poor oral hygiene further increases this risk.

Other factors:
– Repetitive microtrauma (chipped or fractured teeth, dentures incongruous, bad habits or trauma from repeated biting)
– A diet low in fruits and vegetables
– Infection with the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV16-18)

The mucosal area of the oral cavity are usually pink.

White patches (leukoplakia-Lichen planus)
Red patches (eritroplachie)
vegetations (papillomatosis)
Ulcerations and lesions bleed easily (erosive lichen) can be a wake-up call and should be reported to the dentist if not disappear spontaneously within 15 days.

The prevention of oral cancer is implemented through:

Abstaining from smoking and from alcohol
A diet rich in fruits and vegetables
A thorough oral hygiene
Regular professional visits to the dentist
Self-examination of the oral cavity and report suspicious lesions

A late diagnosis means to reduce the possibility of healing therapies and tackle more complex.
